This painting depicts a French ship attacking a British ship. The artist was the son of a jeweller and was born in Whitehaven. He moved to Liverpool in 1806 where he stayed until 1811. He then moved to Greenock, London, Southampton and North Shields. In 1828 he went to America, returning to England in 1842 where he died three years later.
