This study of a solitary dead duck laid on a stone slab is in the long tradition of ‘still life’ paintings. These often included food such as game birds, and reflected on death as much as life.

The artist James Barenger painted all sorts of sporting subjects, from racehorses, sportsmen and their dogs – and the results of their sport like this duck.

There are several paintings of horses by Barenger at Brodsworth Hall, and this still life has hung on the bedroom corridor since the house was built in the 1860s, being recorded there in an inventory of 1885.
