(b Pontypool, 1767; d Bath, 11 Dec. 1847). British painter and lithographer, mainly of landscapes and genre scenes. He was born in Wales but is known as ‘Barker of Bath’ from his main place of work. His work was strongly influenced by the landscapes and fancy pictures of Gainsborough (the most famous artist to work in Bath), and he made his name mainly as a painter of rustic scenes. He was successful for most of his career, but his popularity declined and he died in poverty. His brother Benjamin Barker (1776–1838) and his son Thomas Jones Barker (1815–82) were also painters, mainly of landscapes and military scenes respectively.
