This study was originally attributed toThéodore Géricault, but it is closer in style to his compatriot Dedreux who specialised in equestrian subjects. He was much influenced by Géricault, but also by English sporting artists. The unfinished section to the lower right shows the artist experimenting with the position of the horse’s foreleg as it rears up. The very summery landscape with a dome, palm tree and a fortified building hints at a southern, perhaps African, setting.
