The man on the left is similar in style to figures in paintings by Giovan Battista Langetti, who worked mainly in Venice, while the surgeon on the right is similar to figures in paintings by Pietro della Vecchia (Pietro Muttoni), who also worked in Venice at the same time, sometimes imitating the styles of other painters. The man on the left leans back in pain while the surgeon opens a blood vessel in his arm: possibly the suicide of Seneca?
