This work is typical of many Scottish painters of this period who portrayed the prominent fishing industry in Scotland in the late-nineteenth century. The herring industry in particular boomed during this period until its peak in the first decade of the twentieth century. Many painters romanticised the work done in the coastal fishing villages such as Stonehaven. Muirhead’s painting demonstrates many traditional ideas of associating women with nature, focusing very little on the hard work and drudgery of the life of a fisherwoman.
