John Brett
1831–1902
(b Bletchingley, Surrey, 8 Dec. 1831; d London, 7 Jan. 1902). English painter, mainly of coastal scenes and landscapes. He was influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites and Ruskin (whose work he read avidly), and a handful of his early paintings, such as The Stonebreaker (1857–8, Walker AG, Liverpool), are tours de force of minute and brilliant detail.
