World War I. The airship station at Capel le Ferne between Dover and Folkestone, Kent, was established in spring 1915 to provide anti-submarine patrols urgently needed to protect British shipping in the Dover Straits. At the end of World War I, it had a fleet of nine 'Submarine Scout' airships, which required a large number of men to manoeuvre them around the site and in and out of their huge sheds. Wingless aeroplanes were sometimes used to power airships, as shown here.
