Alfred Thomas Eggington was born in Ibstock in 1888, winning a scholarship to the Imperial College of Science and Technology where he was awarded a first class degree in Chemistry. He served in France in the First World War and was awarded the Military Cross. He also served as headmaster of the Loughborough Junior Day Technical School, later Loughborough Junior College for 33 years from 1919. He was Mayor of Loughborough from 1961 to 1962.
