John Adam Tytler was born at Monghyr, Bengal on 29 October 1825, the third son of Dr John Tytler, a Surgeon in the service of the East India Company, and his wife Anne, daughter of W. Gillies, Esq. of London. When only five years old, John Tytler was sent home to England into the care of his mother’s sisters, with whom he lived until his parents returned from India in 1835. The family stayed for a year in London and then went to Jersey, where John attended a day school near St Helier. In 1837, his father died and he and his mother went to live in Edinburgh, where John attended college.
