This painting depicts Martin Down in Hampshire, near the artist’s home, and was donated by the artist to the collection in memory of his father. Richard Tratt specialises in painting butterflies and moths in their landscape habitat. His trademark technique of scratching through wet paint to reveal a previously painted surface below is clear in this work. Tratt is a member of the Society of Wildlife Artists and the Society of Botanical Artists. He began painting in his teens and attended Northwich College of Art and Dartington College of Arts (1970–1974). Tratt spends a great deal of time observing and sketching his subjects in their environment. Most of his wildlife paintings are finished in the studio but much of his landscape work is painted outdoors.
