Fixed 30 feet up a blank lift-shaft wall in the sloping courtyard, Keith Rand's oak sculpture is a subtle reminder of the natural world in the midst of a man-made building. The sculpture has two conjoined elements. Reflected light from one surface illuminates the other and shadows are continually moving and changing, falling on the wall and activating the surface marks. The artist says of the work, 'I wanted to carve a sculpture that could be seen from all three levels, that had no fixed image but evoked landscape, grasses and open spaces – enhanced by the play of light.' Keith used locally sourced wood for his piece, which he carved using traditional hand tools, such as gouges, mallets, spokeshaves and planes. The sculpture was carved from one block of oak in a process Keith likens to 'sheep nibbling at the grass'.
