With an awareness of Bennett's series of Brunel University paintings from 1986 the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Chris Jenks, commissioned him to make some new paintings to celebrate and depict 'Brunel in the 21st century'. Bennett made drawings, colour studies and photographs on site. He produced two six-foot paintings and these were painted in the studio with frequent return visits to Brunel. Some areas of the canvas were painted and overpainted as lighting conditions changed between site visits, and various figure groupings were also experimented with. Bennett says of this body of work: 'A link exists between the 1986 group and the two 2007 paintings I created of the same viewpoint, as in both it was my intention to make compositions about university spaces.
