Charity is shown here as a woman suckling a baby with two more children by her side; the small girl on the left holds a doll. It was common to show Charity as a woman with children from the 14th century onwards.

Cranach painted the subject of Charity on several occasions; the earliest recorded dated painting is of 1529. Cranach listed two paintings with the subject of Charity in the account of his work made at Augsburg in 1552, but neither can be the present picture as they were described as being painted on canvas, not wooden panel.
