Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo based his style on that of Giovanni Battista Tiepolo (1696–1770), with whom he worked in Italy, Germany, and Spain. After Battista’s death, Domenico returned to his native city of Venice where he was elected President of the Painters' Academy in 1780. In this Bible story (St John VIII, 1–11) Christ was requested to judge a woman accused of adultery and said, 'Said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him cast the first stone at her.'
