A portrait of Connop Thirlwall, historian and scholar, wearing a black coat and an Episcopal apron. Thirlwall was born in Stepney, London, of Northumbrian stock. He was a prodigy, learning Latin at three and Greek at four, and writing sermons at seven. He often became entwined in controversy, largely due to his liberal outlook on theological matters. Frank Holl was a noted society portraitist and engraver. His work included portraits of the Prince of Wales, Lord Roberts, Mr Gladstone and Mr Chamberlain. This painting has been damaged, possibly by fire.
