This beautiful landscape is of the village of Corrie on the Isle of Arran. The beautiful landscapes of the Arran made it a favourite of many artists, and it was a favourite holiday destination for this artist and his family. This painting, like much of the artist’s work, is very detailed and shows a true representation of nature. The work is not romanticised but naturalistic and very representative of the influence of John Ruskin’s teachings during this period. The artist specialised in painting portraits and Scottish historical subjects, but also painted a number of landscapes in watercolour. He studied under Robert Scott Lauder at the Trustees' Academy in Edinburgh and was encouraged to draw from nature. Herdman lived and worked in Edinburgh where established a successful practice.
