Painter. Born in Edinburgh, Walker attended the Slade School of Fine Art and was taught by Walter Sickert. She exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1898, where she was a regular exhibitor of portraits into the 1920s and 1930s, and joined the New English Art Club in 1900. Walker is associated with the Robin Hood's Bay group of artists. She represented Britain at the Venice Biennale in 1930 and 1932 and in 1939 she represented Britain at the World Trade Fair in Chicago with Nausicaa (Tate Britain). She was made a Dame Commander of the British Empire in 1943.There is some doubt about the date of the portrait, an inscription on the back gives the date of 1925, but even allowing for self-deception could the artist really have been sixty-four? The date for the yellow coat as a fashion item would be about 1910.
