This is one of several paintings at Brodsworth Hall which reflect Theobald’s passion for the turf. It is signed by Barenger and dated indistinctly 1812, or 1816, when Theobald was just entering the racing world. He gradually built up a major commercial stud at Stockwell, Middlesex, and had his greatest successes in racing in the 1830s and 1840s.
The sporting artist James Barenger painted the mares and foals of the Theobald Stud in 1825. Three other paintings of horses at Brodsworth have the same gilt frame with shells in the corners as this. They have therefore also been attributed to Barenger.
