The subject of this painting is a walk taken by a group of peasants up into the mountains of Bavaria to visit and pray at shrines on their way. The artist, Hubert von Herkomer, was German in origin and became well known for his paintings and illustrations of the lives of ordinary people. This painting is said to contain the portraits of two identifiable people. The young woman at the top of the procession is said to be Lulu Griffiths and the brooding male figure watching the procession at the top is a self portrait.
