This is the scene at Eastchurch Airfield, Isle of Sheppey, 1911. An eleven-year old boy, Louis Battenburg, later to become Earl Mountbatten of Burma, is about to take his first flight. The aircraft is an S27, built by Short Brothers and piloted by Lieutenant Arthur Longmore, one of the Royal Navy's first four pilots. Young Louis' father, the First Sea Lord, keeps an eye on his son.
