The full painting title is: 'King Edward VII, By the Grace of God, of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and of the British Dominions beyond the Seas, King, Defender of the Faith, Emperor of India'.

Edward VII (1841–1910) was the eldest son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. As the Prince of Wales he had already visited Belfast in 1876 and 1885 but in 1903 he visited Ireland as King, landing at Buncrana, Donegal. Visiting Belfast on this trip he unveiled the statue of his mother, Queen Victoria, at the front of City Hall. Belfast City Hall itself would not be completed for another three years.
