Elizabeth Burnett was Dumbarton's first female councillor to win a seat for Labour in 1947. She was a member of CND, attended many peace marches and was arrested 'so many times ... I've forgotten the number'. She was given the Freedom of Dumbarton for her services to the Peace Movement.

This portrait by Stephen Conroy is one of several commissioned by Dumbarton District Council in 1984. The artist was born in Helensburgh in 1964 and brought up in the parental home at Renton, two miles from Dumbarton. He showed great promise while a pupil at St Patrick's High School, Dumbarton, and after graduating from Glasgow School of Art, gained an international reputation with exhibitions in London, New York and elsewhere. His work, not least his portraiture, is highly valued and in great demand.
