During the period 1917–1921 Carrington's subjects were mostly intimate portraits and landscapes. This painting depicts Watendlath Farm, near Keswick in the Lake District, where the newly-wed Carrington spent a summer holiday with her husband and their friends in 1921. Among the guests was her husband's friend Gerald Brenan, with whom she developed a mutual attraction. The identity of the two figures in white is not known. Throughout her work Carrington depicted women at different stages in their lives contemplating their own femininity. It has been suggested that this depiction of female figures, dwarfed by a fertile and undulating landscape, relates to the artist's sense of being overwhelmed by her own womanhood.
