The sitter was a scholar of Wadham in 1891; Fellow of Merton in 1895; Attorney-Gerneral from 1915 to 1919; Lord Chancellor from 1919 to 1922; Secretary of State for India from 1924 to 1928. He was created Viscount Birkenhead in 1921, then Earl of Birkenhead in 1922.
