Hagar, Abraham's mistress, was expelled by him at the insistence of his wife Sarah. When she and her son Ishmael faced death from thirst an angel of the Lord appeared and pointed out water. This lucid composition was painted in the early 1630s for Cardinal Antonio Barberini. Sacchi upheld the Classical tradition of Raphael against the newer Baroque style in Rome.
