The painting is one of a group of five portraits transferred in 1978 to English Heritage by descendants of the Cadogan and Ames family of Brinkburn Priory. The Manor House where they once hung is no longer furnished, and all the Ames portraits are in store.
Desanges is best known for his Crimean War scenes, shown in the Victoria Cross Gallery exhibition of 1859.
