Henry Martyn was an Anglican priest and missionary. He was educated at St John's College, Cambridge and after a meeting with Charles Simeon, was inspired to become a missionary. He was ordained a priest in the Church of England and became a chaplain for the British East India Company. In 1806 he travelled to India to preach and study linguistics. It was here that he translated the New Testament into Urdu, Persian and Judaeo-Persic. Martyn died of fever in 1812 in Tokat, Ottoman Empire.
