Statesman; MP from 1832; associated himself closely with Peel's policies and temporarily lost seat over repeal of the Corn Laws in 1846. Became colonial secretary and secretary for war in 1852, a position which made him subject to the most hostile criticism during the Crimean War. Resigned as a result in 1855, but returned to government as secretary of state for the colonies (1859–1864). Commissioned by Sir Robert Peel for his 'Statesmen's Gallery'.
