Augustus Frederick (1773–1843), Duke of Sussex, was Grand Master of the United Grand Lodge of England, the governing body of Freemasonry in England and Wales, from 1813 to 1843. Here he is wearing the regalia of a deputy grand master, the office he held in 1812. The portrait was presented to him by the Lodge of Antiquity No. 2, one of the oldest Masonic lodges in England. He was Master, or Ruler, of the Lodge from 1809 to 1843. He gave them the set square-shaped jewel suspended from his collar, which is now on display in the Library and Museum of Freemasonry. He is also wearing the Royal Medal, which he introduced in 1812, and that was given to new members of the Lodge. To the right of this he is wearing the Star of the Order of the Garter, the highest chivalric order in the United Kingdom.
