This plaster cast of of the artist was taken when he was alive. It was probably made for use in Herkomer Art School in Bushey. Herkomer did not allow his students to draw from casts of antique sculpture, instead encouraging them to draw from the casts of heads of interesting modern people. There is the suggestion of a smile on the artist's face, as if he were thinking 'It will be interesting to see what my students make of this!'.
