Once described as a ‘dirty-handed’ gardener, Cedric Morris had a great passion for gardening and bred irises.

As well as irises and tulips, a dazzling white Arum Lily and two stems of Gentiana Lutea are depicted here. The various stages of flowering give an excellent idea of the season – the collapsing tulips and open irises suggest early summer.

The strong, bold and contrasting colours lend the flowers such vitality that the cut stems seem as if they are actually growing from the terracotta pot in which they are arranged.
