George Jamesone was thought to have been born in Aberdeen, the son of a wealthy mason, and later reportedly studied in Antwerp 'under Rubens alongside of Van Dyck'. He was practising as a portrait painter in Aberdeen by 1620 and established a successful practice in both Aberdeen and Edinburgh. He enjoyed royal patronage and painted the most celebrated Scotsmen of the time. He is considered to have been the founder of the native Scottish School of Portraiture.
