Foundry scene of workers around a furnace, the light from the fire is casting shadows behind the workers extending across the dark room. The painting style is textured with short, directional marks from the brush, reminiscent of impressionism. The predominant colours are steel-coloured blues and greys, with various flashes of bright white or orange to represent the heat of the furnace. There is a fish-eye lens effect in the picture, especially visible in the floor section which is dramatically curved.
