Eckford joined the 6th Bengal Native Infantry in 1844 as an ensign, and was promoted to lieutenant in 1850 – this portrait may have been commissioned to commemorate that promotion. He was wounded at Meerut at the outbreak of the Indian Mutiny (1857–1859) and never fully recovered: he died from the wounds in 1872.
