It was Dod’s series of monumental paintings of young women, to which she turned in the early 1920s, which led to her international recognition. 'Lilian' was one of three works with which she first made an impression at the Royal Academy in 1923 and she included 'Lilian' in the successful joint exhibition she held with her husband, Ernest, at the Leicester Galleries in December 1925. ‘Lilian’ has not been identified but she was probably one of the local Newlyn girls who posed for Dod. She may have been painted at North Corner, the Newlyn home acquired by the Procters by 1923.
