A portrait of Richard, son of John Pennant of Jamaica and Bonella Hodges, who married the Penrhyn heiress, Anne Susannah Warburton in 1765. He was MP for Petersfield and subsequently for Liverpool and was created Lord Penrhyn in the Irish peerage in 1783. It was painted in the 1790s, when Lord Penrhyn was building a road up the Nant Ffrancon to Capel Curig which established the Shrewsbury Holyhead route perfected by Telford. Lord Penrhyn points to a map of the road, which indicates the distance saved by the new, more direct route. In the background is the Royal Hotel (now Plas y Brenin) which he built at Capel Curig in 1800, shown against a somewhat exaggeratedly mountainous background.
