This figure was described by historian Sir Michael Moissey Postan as ‘a XVII century statue of the Good Shepherd of the South Germany (The "Upper Rhine") School’. He donated it to Girton College in memory of his wife, Eileen Power, who was interested in wool and sheep and had collected contemporary representations of shepherds. Eileen was a former student at Girton and was appointed Director of Studies in History at the College in 1913. She went on to have a stellar academic career, including her appointment as a Professor at the London School of Economics. Her many highly acclaimed publications included influential works on women’s history. She also gave memorable BBC Schools Radio broadcasts and wrote a series of history books for children, spreading ideas of internationalism.
