A reworking of 'The School of Love' of 1760 (Karlsruhe, Staatliche Kunsthalle), 'Shepherd and Shepherdess Reposing' was one of Boucher’s last essays in the pastoral genre. When the picture was exhibited at the 1761 Salon it was praised by the critic of the Mercure de France: ‘What grace and what art embellish this light-hearted subject! The facial characters are of an infinite agreeableness … The grouping of the two figures is elegant and lightly intertwined. The materials are true, graciously draped and without affectation. The background is fresh, rich and expansive; and the colouring is of such harmony that, although only a connoisseur may appreciate its true skill, all eyes must feel its effect’. 'Shepherd and Shepherdess Reposing' belonged in the eighteenth century to one of the artist’s greatest friends, Randon de Boisset.
