Peter Monamy was trained as a house decorator and seems to have graduated to marine painting on the basis of a natural talent and love of ships. He was one of the leading figures of the first generation of English marine painters. He was lucky to be around when the Van de Veldes and other Dutch painters arrived in England and fostered an interest in marine paintings.
