Sir John Braddick Monckton (1832–1902) served as the President of the Board of General Purposes of the United Grand Lodge of England, the governing body of Freemasonry in England and Wales, from 1874 to 1883. In this portrait he is wearing the regalia of that office. Although it is indistinguishable here, the emblem is the coat of arms of the United Grand Lodge of England. The portrait was presented to Monckton by Buckingham and Chandos Lodge No.1150, of which he was a founding member in 1883. The artist was a fellow member of the Lodge. In March 1890 Monckton gave it to the United Grand Lodge of England. Later that year his successor as President of the Board, Thomas Fenn, presented his portrait by the same artist to hang alongside that of Monckton.
