Richard Jackson (1818–1990) was the illegitimate son of the 4th Marquess of Hertford and Mrs Agnes Jackson (née Wallace). He changed his surname to Wallace in 1842. In 1870 he inherited the unentailed properties of Lord Hertford, including his great art collection. In 1871 he was created a Baronet and married Julie-Amélie-Charlotte Castelnau, by whom he had one son, Edmond (1840–1887). Like his father, he was an important collector of art, particularly of the medieval and Renaissance periods. His widow bequeathed The Wallace Collection to the British nation in 1897. This portrait was presented to Wallace at Hertford House on 9 August 1886 by tenants and friends of the estate at Sudbourne, Suffolk (see Stanfield P354), which he had owned 1874–1884.
