Described as an 'elegy to dissolution' by the art critic William Feaver, this was the last painting on which Andrews worked, while undergoing treatment for cancer. The subject was close to his heart because of its relationship to William Mallord Turner's studies of the same theme and for its recurrence in the work of his favourite author, Charles Dickens. On a trip to Canvey Island in Essex, Andrews made sketches, notes and photographs of lugworm diggers and men fishing. These figures, and a group taken from a photograph of late Victorians standing on the end of a jetty on the Thames, are positioned as intermediaries looking out to sea, giving scale to the painting.
