As a boy Alfred Dedreux often visited the studio of Théodore Géricault, who remained an enduring influence on his work. Eugène Delacroix's exotic hunting scenes and George Stubbs's 'Horse Attacked by a Lion' (Tate) also informed this early piece. Although the violent subject may not appeal to modern tastes, the artist has shown great skill in this dramatic depiction of a hunter on horseback killing a lion. The drama is enhanced through the artist's use of a diagonal line, which runs from top left to bottom right of the composition, creating a sense of dynamic force as the hunter bears down on the powerful creature.
