This painting shows the site of a demolished care home in Coventry. George Shaw, who grew up in the city, is one of the foremost contemporary painters in Britain. Shaw’s ‘The End of…’ series captures the decline of a mid-20th century housing estate, something that is common throughout the country. This work has particular resonance with the early 2020s and the impact that acute shortages in the social care system, the COVID-19 pandemic and the cost-of-living crisis have had on the elderly and most vulnerable in our society.
