After working in Rome where he worked with Vernet, Patch settled in Florence in 1757. He specialised in caricature groups of visitors such as Sir Watkin William-Wynn and his friends. Patch also painted views of sights popular with Grand Tourists. The spectacular man-made falls or cascade at Terni, near Perugia, are 200 meters high and were cut in 272 BC by Curius Dentatus, conqueror of the Sabines.
