A rural landscape. In the centre foreground is a four-wheeled wagon, driving along a country lane that leads off towards the right. It is loaded with country folk: there are four women in white bonnets, three seated on the straw-covered floor of the cart, and one standing holding a rake. A tall male farm worker, his shirt open at the chest, looks at her. Two other men, in wide-brimmed hats, ride on the wagon, which is being pulled by three horses, white, chestnut, and black. To the right of the cart stands a traveller, his brown coat patched at the elbow. He wears ragged trousers, and has a small barrel over his shoulders. He points into the distance, and is probably asking for a lift. To the left of the wagon stands a huge dead tree, part of its bark off, standing amongst a clump of other trees.
