Thomas Brooks was a very successful and popular Victorian painter. This painting shows a death bed scene from Oliver Goldsmith's 'The Deserted Village' and bears the quotation: 'And as a bird each fond endearment tries,/To tempt its new-fledged offspring to the skies,/He tried each art, reproved each dull delay,/Allowed to brighter worlds, and led the way.'
