The composition, which owes much to Stubbs, arrays the horses in front of a spreading tree, with a house in the background. It is signed and dated 1825, the year in which John Theobald first advertised his stud at Stockwell, Middlesex in the Racing Calendar. There are also portraits at Brodsworth of Theobald (1766–1849) by G. F. Joseph, and with his most successful horse, Rockingham, by James Ward.
This painting has hung in the Billiard Room at Brodsworth since the house was built in the 1860s, with other paintings of racehorses by Barenger, Herring and Ward. These came to Brodsworth through the marriage of Theobald’s granddaughter, Georgiana, to Charles Thellusson.
