Walter Sickert was born in Munich and moved to England in 1868 with his parents. He was a pupil of James Abbott McNeill Whistler, the American-born artist who dedicated most of his work to exploring tone and colour. This painting is typical example of Sickert’s work during this period. He has employed lighter colours and tones than in previous works and the composition and style of the piece resembles mural decoration.
